Wanting to prove the versatility of Stand Up Paddle boards, my young son, Griffin, and I
went SUP Camping on the September long weekend.
A 3 km paddle to uninhabited Black Fox Island in Lac La Biche, Alberta, Canada was our
destination. The paddle over was beautiful - absolute glass.
Once our base camp was set up we went exploring on the island, seeing a Bald Eagle and two
White Tail Deer.
Then it was time for a fire on the beach and a dinner of hot dogs and marsh mellows. The
next morning we awoke to rain and lots of wind. Packing up quickly and heading for home we
rounded the corner of the island and ran straight into a 20 knot head wind.
I ended up passing my leash to my son - and towing him back for the worst part. Our easy
paddle of 20 minutes on the way over the day before was a struggle to make it home and
ended up taking over an hour and a half.
We made it back and after warming up we began planning our next camping trip to another
distant island for next summer. Griffin is already watching all the episodes of Survivor
man to learn all the Bush tricks he can, to apply to his next SUP camping adventure.
