Team News The Starboard SUP team Starring Ekolu Kalama, Scott Mckercher, Anne Marie Reichman and others, continue the search for perfection across the globe. This time they're off to explore Chicama in Peru, the longest left-hander in the world. The breaks in the north west of Peru offers perfect, point and reef breaks, peeling endlessly from knee size to double over head. Even though Chicama and Pacasmayo are considered some of the best surf spots in the world, the region is still fairly untouched. In between surf sessions, our team will also be discovering historical heritage area's Chan Chan and El Brujo archeological sites. It is also planned to stage a Stand-Up Paddle workshop for the local school kids. Anyone who is willing to participate, will receive much love from the local community and us. Our Team will also hold a SUP clinic on Friday 22nd May in front of Waikiki beach club, Costa Verde. Government officials including the Minister for Tourism and sports and possibly the President himself have knowledge of this and have shown interest in attending at this day and to meet our team. Followed by a dinner at Kapayac restaurant with special invited guests to include legendary Peruvian surfers, bonding the transpacific relationship between the two surfing cultures. BACK TO THE ROOTS Traditionally, the art of surfing is derived directly from the old members of the Hawaiian royalty, who surfed on boards made by themselves from materials locally available. The art of surfing was considered "the sport of kings", and the major part of the contemporary history. The first men, who experienced the pleasure of surfing in Peru, were fishermen who had to utilize the powerful waves in order to get food. The necessary courage, in combination with the instinct of survival resulted in a ritual similar to that of other warriors in history. Because surfing was one of the most important parts in the learning process of every fisherman, the success of the daily catch depended on complete knowledge of the waves and the ocean. Starboard feels privilege to visit Peru, the birthplace of TIKI. Once again Hawaiins will bring surfing to another level in Peru. Showing the Peruvian and the rest of the world how SUP is mostly enjoyable and made for everyone. Thanks to Clay Feeter, Publisher of Standup Journal who first initiated Chicama as a destination for Starboard. Clay's effort has opened a great opportunity for us to explore Peru and create a landmark in SUP history. Starboard in Peru will be featured in Standup Journals' fall issue. We would also like to thank Simon Russell, journalist and organiser for all your amazing efforts, and offcourse Chicama surf resort http://www.surferdream.com and Machapu Adventures http://www.machapuadventures.com for your support. This trip would not have been possible without your help. 7 SURFERS TAKES ON THE LONGEST LEFT-HANDER IN THE WORLD Ekolu Kalama (Hawaii) Surfer • 33 Professional Stand Up Paddle surfer.
